Resume Verbs Before and After

Resume Verbs Before and AfterResume Verbs Before and AfterCertified professional resume writers Andrew Pearl and Tina Harlan use examples to explain how to improve your resume using the right action verbs.Active verbs can inspire recruiters and hiring managers to follow through with scheduling an interview.Andrew Pearl and Tina Harlan, certified professional resume writers who work with Ladders, provided these before-and-after examples of how to improve your resume using the right action verbs.Sample 1 Senior-Level Technology Management ProfessionalResume writer Andrew PearlSection Skills SummaryBeforeI am a bilingual, seasoned business executive who successfully incorporates IT into the strategic mission of an enterprise. As a passionate leader I have engaged enterprise technology to maximize a strong return on assets. I have hands-on financial, project management, technical and operational experience that has resulted in successful IT capital planning and budgeting, disaster recove ry and IT security procedures and policies. The verbs deliver the message that the candidate has had a long history of success and profitability, but the passage uses passive language and too many words. For example, this candidate noted that he had engaged enterprise technology to maximize a strong return on assets a long-winded way to say that he improved the bottom line. He also used the passive voice when he stated that his experience has resulted in successful IT capital planning and budgeting- a construction that separates the candidate from the positive result.AfterStrategic and results-driven executive commanding 20+ years of progressive success within technical environments. Hands-on and resourceful professional providing track record of incorporating IT into strategic visions while maximizing return and improving operations. Diverse and customer-focused manager who demonstrates unique combination of technical, business, and financial savvy.Pearl paired strong action verbs, including commanding, maximizing and improving, with results-focused language about profitability and a history of success maximized returns, 20+ years of commanding success and improved operations. Potential employers are always alert for these words, which suggest that applicants are savvy about the bottom line.Sample 2 Professional Sales Representative, Pharmaceutical IndustryResume writer Tina HarlanSection Work HistoryBeforeSold Avinza for chronic pain and Skelaxin for acute pain to both primary care physicians and pain specialists in North Texas and Southern Oklahoma.Made an immediate impact on prescription volume after only being in the field for three and a half months.Sold is brief and to the point, but it probably doesnt account for all the candidates responsibilities. The verb construction made an immediate impact is bogged down by a passive voice.AfterResponsible for selling and promoting Skelaxin and Avinza to pain specialists, surgeons, neurologists, and primary care physicians in the North Texas and Southern Oklahoma territory.Managed annual educational and entertainment budget averaging $70,000.Increased prescription volume despite being in the field for less than four months. The phrase responsible for selling and promoting, while longer than the original sold, expands the responsibility of the applicant to include promotion, which creates the impression of greater responsibility. Increased prescription volume is a slight change that infuses the description with action, turning the applicant into the catalyst for pumping up volume instead of simply being someone who made an impact.Harlan also paired the verb managed with a dollar-specific budget to strengthen the message.

7 clues youre about to be fired and what you can do about it

7 clues youre about to be fired and what you can do about it7 clues youre about to be fired and what you can do about itIf youre feeling that Monday morning dread every day of the week - you may be onto something. While its not always a great idea to trust your gut about every single work issue, heres when it may be worth wondereif if your jobs in danger.1. Youre not that busyRyan Naylor, Founder of LocalWork.com, offered a few hints to keep an eye out for if you think you might be fired for wertmiger zuwachs reasons You might notice that you arent getting handed as many projects as you were before. Something might have happened, or maybe there was a series of events that caused these concerns to arise.2. Youre given loads of days offBelieve it or not, sometimes good things disguise really crummy things. If your boss is thinking about firing you, its entirely possible youll suddenly find yourself with a lot of vacation days. Maybe they readily grant you days off so they dont have t o face you as they plan for your termination, Naylor said.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more3. Theyre cooling offIf your boss or manager sense that youll soon be on the way out, you may suddenly find yourself Being excluded from important department meetings that you are customarily included in, according to Scott Samuels of Horizon Hospitality. You might be receiving fewer lunch invitations or group emails, and Naylor says There could be a lack of eye contact and a disconnection that feels dismissive.4. Your company is downsizingIf you think the company is downsizing and your position may be eliminated, look for worried managers, a lot of executive meetings and listen for break room rumors, Naylor says.Ask yourself if what your department produces is still in need, or whether theres a slowdown in demand for your services in general. And while youre at it, Naylor says, think abou t whether your department is bloated during a time of financial distress for the company. If any of these signs ring true, Naylor says you have to consider the tough fact that you may be let go. There isnt much you can do if downsizing is imminent, he says. What you should do though, is start planning. Your layoff may include a severance package, but this doesnt mean you should take a vacation, Naylor says. The longer you are unemployed, the less appealing you will be to recruiters and hiring managers.5. Theyre playing the fieldSamuels said a sure sign youre about to be fired is finding a listing on an internet job board of your job (or one thats really similar) posted by your company. Even worse though, is when you find a posting of your job in your city listed as confidential.6. Theres a new kid in townSamuels said a sure sign youre probably going to be fired is when other individuals start becoming overly involved in your department and/or with your responsibilities, specifically ones theyd never been previously involved in.7. Youre on probationFinding out that youve been put on a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan) by your direct supervisor and given a specific time frame to correct deficiencies, is never a great sign, according to Samuels. What you can doSo, should you give up entirely and hand in your resignation? Not just yet.Be proactive As painful as it feels, Samuels said you should be proactive in sitting down with your immediate supervisor and discussing/resolving issues that could result in termination.Step up your game Samuels also advises putting in extra time and hours to go above and beyond to show your commitment to the company.Consult with HR If at all possible, Samuels thinks its a good idea to Sit down with your Human Resource Manager/Director and advise them about your observations. Ask them if there is anything that you need to be concerned about. Be tactful and careful when doing this so you dont come across as being overly paranoid.Make n ice Naylor says If you want to keep your job, there are some things you can do. The fact that you werent fired out of hand might mean that they are hesitating, considering whether you are still a value-add. Show them that you are. Apologize for the incidents that led to this precarious position you are in. Show humility. Offer to show them an improvement over a specific period of time. Be specific and, once again, be humble.Get moving And if the inevitable is just around the corner, start planning now. Naylor says Your layoff may include a severance package, but this doesnt mean you should take a vacation. The longer you are unemployed, the less appealing you will be to recruiters and hiring managers. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from jngste im bunde Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an i nterview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

I got there first! How your subjective experience of time makes you think you did even when you didnt

I got there first How your subjective experience of time makes you think you did even when you didntI got there first How your subjective experience of time makes you think you did even when you didntImagine a championship match between two rival basketball teams. The game is tied, seconds left on the shot clock, two players lunge forward, reaching for the ball. In a split second, their hands both collide with the ball, but neither player gains possession. Instead, the ball goes soaring out of bounds. Immediately an argument erupts as each player claims the other knocked the ball out. The referee desperately tries to break the two apart and make the correct call.Heated arguments like this are an all-too-familiar sight in competitive sports. From tennis to baseball to football (both versions) to basketball, referees and umpires have a tough job making high-stakes judgment calls on what happened and where, knowing full well that no matter what they decide, players and fans alike will be outraged.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAs cognitive scientists, my colleagues and I are interested in explaining differences in perception among people watching the same events unfold. In baseball, researchers already know that differences in the speed of sound versus the speed of light can cause different perceptions of whether a player is safe or out. What about in the basketball example? Are both players simply lying to get the ball back to their team, or is there something more going on?How time passes is subjectiveFirst, you need to understand a little about time. Time is subjective. Physicists have known this to be true since 1905, thanks to Einstein himself. Most simply, his theory suggested that time passes differently depending on factors like speed and gravity. (Remember the movie Interstellar?)Subjective time, however, is not limited to the fantasies of science fiction and thought experiments in physics. Many researchers, such as neuroscientist David Eagleman, have studied neurological time and how your own experiences can shape your perception of time, such as how time seems to slow down during a traumatic experience. In 2002, cognitive neuroscientist Patrick Haggard and his colleagues showed that voluntary action has the ability to shape ones perception of time. In their study and subsequent replications, it welches shown that an action and its effect can be perceptually bound together in time. For example, if you use an outdated computer, you may be familiar with the experience of double-clicking a folder, only for it to open several hundred milliseconds later. At first, this delay can be frustrating. But over time, you adapt to the delay and it feels nearly instantaneous. This process of adapting to the delay, called intentional binding by researchers, paved the way for studies investigating how the feeling of ownership over events affec ts your perception of what happened. With the slow computer, you know that the folder opening was a result of your clicking, even if it happened later. This knowledge and feeling of ownership over the opening of the folder is what results in intentional binding, and leads to the delay feeling shorter as you adapt to it.Putting time estimates to the testGoing back to those two basketball players (whove called a time out to cool off while we figure this out) objectively, they cant both have touched before the other. However, we wanted to know whether both players could have really experienced that they touched the ball first and the other person knocked it out.In order to test this possibility, we devised a simple experiment. Two participants sat across from one another at a table. Following a flash of light, each used their right hand to tap the others left hand as quickly as they could. They then made a temporal order judgment a decision on which event happened first. In order to i solate just the perceptual experiences of the two taps, we platzdeckchen up a divider between the participants to make sure they couldnt see each other or know how the other person responded. Participants also received no feedback about whether their judgments were correct or incorrect. In our experiment, participants were significantly more likely to report that they touched first. Even when both participants tapped each other at the same time, participants reported that their own touch happened first 67% of the time. This bias functionally translates into an apparent delay in processing their partners touch even when their own touch was 50 milliseconds later than their partners touch, participants perceived both events to be simultaneous. We controlled for each participants ability to see their partner, but we still wondered whether this bias could be socially influenced. So we ran another experiment with a similar setup, except this time the other participant was replaced with a m echanical device that tapped their hand.Even when making judgments between their own touch and a mechanical touch, participants still reported that their own touch occurred first. This time, when their touch and the mechanical touches were simultaneous, there was a 75% probability that participants said they themselves touched first. In fact, even when we removed the mechanical touch altogether and replaced it with an auditory click, participants still perceived their touch as happening first.Researchers mathematically modeled the zeiteinteilung people perceived (on the vertical axis) against the objective timing (on the horizontal axis) of the touch. Even when touches were simultaneous, participants were more likely to report that their own tap happened first.Your own actions seem to happen soonerThese results show that people really do experience the order of events differently, perceiving externally generated events as happening later than events they themselves caused. This bias , which we named the Egocentric Temporal Order Bias, builds upon existing research showing the importance of vantage in perception. It further supports the subjective nature of time perception, and can help explain why sports calls can become so heated and divisive. Differences in perspective can result in conflicting experiences of the same event.Returning to our two basketball players, our experiment suggests that both players are indeed telling the truth Each experienced their own touch first, and so think their opponent was the one who knocked the ball out of bounds. Rather than continuing to argue, perhaps our on-court rivals can recognize their two different experiences of what happened, accept the refs call that they really both touched the ball simultaneously and resume play by a jump ball.Outside the realm of sports, research looking into biases and illusions in perception can help inform our relationship with technology. If the bias we found truly represents a delay in reg istering unexpected events, technologies like automated emergency braking systems can help save lives. As for why people experience this bias in the first place, the answer isnt immediately clear. My colleagues and I speculate that it may support a constructive model of perception, where your conscious experience is not an objective representation of reality, but rather built by your brain using information from your senses to generate the world around you, much like a dream. However, there are many potential explanations for mechanisms that could be causing this bias.So as the crowd roars and celebrates their new champion, we researchers still have work to do. Perhaps our new findings will lend insights to an argument in another sport but thats a whole different ball game.Ty Tang, Research Scientist in Cognitive Science, Arizona State UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. The percentage of CEOs fired for wrongdoing increased from 3.9% between 2007 to 2011 to 5.3% from 2012 to 2016.The litany of extreme CEO wrongdoing - and how to stop itWhat do CEOs get dismissed for? Theres a long list of reasons, all of which are pretty extreme fraud, bribery, insider trading, sexual indiscretions, inflated resums and flawed responses to environmental disasters. But mora of those leaders are getting found ou t - and fired.PwCattributedfive factors to CEOs being held liable for their actions decreased faith in big companies and CEOs since the financial crisis in 2007-2008 the Great Recession and the aftermath, which has made people more sensitive to financial issues a jump in digital correspondence (where evidence can be documented) laws resulting from major events the idea that working abroad and using production processes that involve other nationscan pose increased risk of ethical violations and the never-ending cycle of news. There are easy ways for companies to avoid moral offenses, PwC said. They include emphasizing integrityso workers dont violate policies, and making sure that company benchmarks for performance arent easily gamed.Have big companies gone off the ethical deep end?But the researchers claim not to have an answer to that question based on the findings. Our data cannot show - and perhaps no data could - whether theres more wrongdoing at large corporations today than in the past. However, we doubt thats the case, based on ur own experience working with hundreds of companies over many years. In fact, our data shows that companies are continuing to improve both their processes for choosing and replacing CEOs and their leadership governance practices - especially in developed countries, the study says. The benefits of being an ethical leaderWhen CEOs act in the best interest of employees, they may reap the benefits in terms of both money and employees feeling more connected to their work.In a 2015 interview with the Harvard Business Review, Fred Kiel, author of the book Return on Character The Real Reason Leaders and Their Companies Win, talked about the results of his study as described in the text. The research reportedly included more than 100 CEOs and 8,000 hours employee observations of them.We found that strong-character leaders contributed an amazing almost five times bottom line profitability as do the weak character leaders. And they enjoy a much higher level of workforce engagement, about 26% higher. And they also have a significant impact on reducing corporate risk to the company, Kiel told the Harvard Business Review. The upshot Acting morally at large company benefits more than just the CEO- it can have a major impact on the financial stability of the business.

Humor in the Job Interview - Spark Hire

Humor in the Job Interview - Spark HireMany job interview candidates feel that they are the only ones at the conference table with something to lose. While human resource managers are certainly in a power position, it is important for employers to leave a positive impression so that they can hire the best talent. A sense of humor can be a great part of this positive impression, provided that employers remain professional during the job interview.Humor can be a great tool in a professional job interview. A good sense of humor can put a candidate more at ease, and can help contribute to a great candidate experience. A more casual tone also helps simulate a day-to-day office atmosphere (we hope, anyway). Judging a candidates response to a few jokes gives employers a good idea of how they will fit in with the rest of the office. Humor allows a better glimpse into a candidates personality. In order to keep humor professional during a job interview, try to stick to work-related topics and h umor. Your jokes should complement the substance of an interview, not be the substance of an interview. For example, a joke about the iPhone 84 while talking about social media marketing is totally appropriate. Going on a tangent about your grandmother who cant work her cell phone because one of her cats stole it, and she makes THE BEST muffins is not so appropriate. Jokes about technology, common industry complaints, and workplace behavior can all be appropriate. However, beware of speaking too strongly about people in your office. These jokes should still maintain an overall positive view of your office. Jabs at a coworker who always breaks the printer are probably fine. Making fun of someones work wertzuwachs or negative attitude is not professional and gives a bad impression.Although a perfect job interview would stay exactly on topic for the durationthat doesnt always happen. Talk about hobbies and such isnt very productive, but some topics can still be safe and professional fo r employers. Sports and weather are usually fun, neutral topics. Be sure that your jokes about rival sports teams are kind, thoughMany other topics of conversation have unexpected pitfalls. We all know not to joke about race, politics, or religion in a job interview (or ever, really). However, also watch out for things related to hobbies, pet ownership and personal habits. Not only are these topics unnecessaryand bordering on inappropriateto a job interview, but they are giant gray areas for employers. There is no good way to make a joke about these topics without the risk of offending someone. What advice do you have for using humor in job interviews? Five Ways To Use LinkedIn To Support Your Job Search

Five Ways To Use LinkedIn To Support Your Job SearchFive Ways To Use LinkedIn To Support Your Job SearchWhen people think of LinkedIn, the networking aspect is typically the first thing that comes to mind. This is important for your job search because networking is important to your search. Here are five other reasons to use LinkedIn for your job search that are unrelated to direct networkingFind company hiring patternsIf youre interested in a company, look for patterns in the employee backgrounds. Do most come from the saatkorn school or the same company? What specific skills and experiences do they share? How a company has hired before gives you an indication of their preferences and therefore how you might position yourself to be attractive to that company.View career trajectoriesIf you have a specific long-term career target but are unsure how to get there, look at people who have that job and what they did along the way. What degrees and certifications do they have? What were their early jobs? If many people who now have the job you want share the same background, this might be an indication that the career track is very specific. You will want to plan your next jobs to collect those same skills and experiencesGet salary or other unpublished dataUse the Groups and QA functions to collect this data. Look for tightly segmented Groups or ask your questions very specifically i.e., years of experience, specific role, tight geographic area to get the most useful answersElaborate on your expertiseThe Applications feature of LinkedIn enables you to share presentations (SlideShare), document what youve read (Amazon reading list), or link to your blog (several applications, including WordPress). These are substantive ways to elaborate on your expertise beyond your resume. For career changers, where a resume will reflect past experience youd rather not repeat, these applications enable you to showcase different skills.Turn every email into a pitchDuring the job search it is common to reach out to people you may not know well to request an exploratory meeting. You want to keep the email short but you want to share enough about your background to entice the person to meet with you. Attaching a resume is presumptuous. Putting your LinkedIn hyperlink in your signature enables you to subtly share your resume without the attachment. Used in your everyday email signature, your LinkedIn hyperlink effectively turns every email into a potential marketing document, as people may click on your profile and learn more about you without you having to ask.Posted by Caroline Cenize-Levine

How to Answer Why Do You Want This Job

How to Answer Why Do You Want This JobHow to Answer Why Do You Want This Job52It might be one of the most common job interview questions out there. And yet, it can still stump even the most seasoned job seekers. Why do you want this job? is one of those questions that if answered correctly, can make you leap frog to the top of the talent pool. But if you botch it, well, thanks for coming in and well call you if we have any further questions.Heres how to answer (and how to not answer) the question Why do you want this job?DO say you like the companys culture.Company culture is a big deal to job candidates. It is essentially the heart of the company, representing its beliefs on how workers should be treated, the companys mission, its humanitarian efforts, all rolled into one. If its true, in your answer you can say, This companys culture is notable for its ______ and ______, both of which are important to me as well. This shows a potential employer that a) you not only are well-versed in the companys culture, but b) you took the time to connect its core beliefs to your own.DONT say you hated your boss/company/colleagues.Weve all had that boss who welches mora bossy than brotherly, and colleagues who were more cutting than caring. But no matter how much you loathed the people you worked with, you should never, ever mention it to a hiring manager. Saying something like, I cant stand the people I work with and need a change, or even the softer, There was some personal conflict between me and my boss, wont bode well for a second interview. Switch it up instead to say, Ive heard that X boss is wonderful to work for and I look forward to learning from him.DO say you feel that you can grow in this job and with this company. Employers arent just looking to fill a position for a few months they want workers who will grow with their companies over time. By stating that you want to make roots with the organization and grow in your job, that can be music to a recruiters ears DONT say you hate commuting and want to work from home and never see another person again. Okay, so we exaggerate- but only slightly. If you make your Why do you want to work here? answer all about the flexible work policy (and your ability to work remotely), that just wont cut it. In fact, it will probably cut you out of contention, since that answer says nothing about how you can benefit the company, but rather, how the companys workplace flexibility will work for you. No matter how desperate you are to work from home (and weve been there, believe us), dont focus on it too much in your response.DO say why you think the fit is perfect.During your job interview, make it easy for your potential boss to see why youd be a great fit for the company by connecting the dots for him. Show him how this one position is exactly the perfect fit for your career at this moment in time (combining all of your skills and work experiences) and why its an exact match for how you envision your path in the future, too. A response that weaves in these elements helps an employer see that youve thought about why working for the company makes sense- for both of you. While there are many strange job interview questions that are designed to psychologically mess you up, dont let Why do you want to work here? be one of them. Know your whys, and then practice your answer so when youre interviewing for a job that you really want, you deliver an honest (and amazing) answerLooking for more interview advice? For instance, maybe you were working at a clothing store and thought: “If we group apparel by color, I bet it will be more eye-catching and lead to more sales.” And so you actually tried an experiment where you put out a table of color-matched items right next to a traditional one and measured which grouping sold better. If so, guess what? You already have experience with the most important technique in the entire tech industry: A/B testing. Whether it’s Google showing different versions of its homepage to different users to find out which gets the most clicks or Uber offering different pricing to different customers to find the sweet spot, testing one hypothesis (A) against the existing version (B) is the fastest way to learn what works. So if you’ve already employed this methodology, be sure to take credit for it with a bullet like this: “A/B tested retail merchandising tactics leading to a 27% increase in sales week-over-week.” CRM Does your organization track its customers using any kind of software? If so, chances are that you already have experience with one of the most common tools in the tech world: CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software. These are the platforms (typically sold by Salesforce, SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft) that sales, marketing, and customer service teams use to identify prospective customers, target them with deals and offers, and serve them well once they’re onboard. Which means that, having experience with them, can give you a big leg up for roles on these teams. So if you’ve got experience using these tools (even if sold by a different vendor), be sure to showcase it with a resume bullet like this: “Managed CRM for manufacturing clients, identifying 10 existing customers who were ripe to grow, leading to $57K in incremental revenue.” CTR Have you ever measured the performance of anything online? For instance, maybe you sent out an employee newsletter through Mailchimp and noticed that your newest version got more clicks than your last one? Or perhaps you put up a Facebook ad for your nonprofit that generated a lot more interest than anyone expected? If so, you’re likely experienced with one of the most common measures of success in the tech world: CTR (Click-Through Rate). This is a simple calculation that can apply to just about any digital experience: The Number of People Who Clicked on the Experience (Ad/Email/Webpage)The Number of People Who Saw the Experience While CTR isn’t the most important number in the long-run, since tech firms want to generate long-lasting engagement and revenue (not just clicks), it’s a great short-term proxy for whether users are interested in something. And so if you’ve got that experience, be sure to flaunt it, as in this example bullet: “Increased the CTR on our internal employee emails from 5% to 10% within just six weeks.” GTM Can you think of a time when you helped launch a new product or service? If so, you’ve been responsible for what the tech world likes to call GTM i.e., Go-to-Market. This phrase encapsulates all the planning and processes that go into a big launch. Everything from a high-level sales and marketing strategy all the way down to having PR response plans ready for potential crises and customer service teams trained up to handle client questions. So no matter which piece of that overall launch effort you’ve been responsible for in the past, be sure to list it on your resume like this: “Led GTM for new confectionery product, coordinating manufacturing and distribution, leading to sales of $2.3M in the first quarter of availability.” MVP Did you ever throw three touchdowns in the Super… just kidding. This isnt that kind of MVP. Instead, it stands for Minimum Viable Product an approach to new product development that’s been all the rage in the tech world since Eric Ries published The Lean Startup back in 2011. The idea of an MVP is that, too often, tech companies spend years building a complex, fancy product, only to discover that no one wants it. So to prevent this huge amount of waste, product managers and engineers are encouraged to build only the smallest, most basic version of a new idea before bringing it to customers. That way, they can gather feedback and measure demand before they invest years and millions of dollars in improving the concept. And so, if you’ve ever built a prototype to show customers or asked for feedback from clients before something was fully polished, you’ve also designed an MVP. Here’s an example bullet: “Designed MVP for new lawn mower concept, gathering feedback from 27 customers; much of which went into the final, award-winning design.” OKRs OK, here’s an easy one: Have you ever set a clear goal for yourself? As low a bar as that seems, it’s a huge part of how tech companies operate today. Specifically, thousands of firms from tech giants to tiny startups have embraced a planning framework called Objectives and Key Results (OKRs). Originally used by Intel, then later popularized at Google, this approach requires all employees to have a clear set of goals and target outcomes every quarter. For example: Objective: Make Google the top search engine in America Key Result: Google Search’s US market share should be #1 according to Comscore by March 31 So if you’ve ever applied this same, measurable approach to evaluating your own performance, feel free to share with a bullet like this: “Brought on 27 new clients, outperforming OKRs by 56%.” SQL Are you an Excel pro? Does the idea of running a VLOOKUP get you pumped up? If so, chances are you have what it takes to be great at one of the most universal tools of the tech trade: SQL (Structured Query Language). While SQL (often pronounced “see-quil”) is a programming language, don’t let that be a turn off. It’s not only the absolute easiest one to master (compared to say Java or C++), it’s the most useful language for every tech worker to know, even if you’re not a coder. That’s because it’s the way that you get information out of pretty much every database you’ll encounter in the tech world. For instance, if you worked at Pinterest and wanted to find out what the most pinned item in the world was, you could do that with a couple of lines of code. Or if you worked at Twitter and wanted to figure out who had the most followers, 3 minutes worth of SQL would get you the answer. And make you look pretty badass in the process! So even if you’ve never used SQL before, check out Codeacademy’s free course. Chances are, if you’re already good at Excel, you’ll pick it up in a couple of hours. Which will will let you apply it in your own job and write a resume bullet like this: “Used SQL to query the inventory database, helping to predict which items were in danger of being out of stock before the big holiday sales season.” UX Have you ever spent hours making sure that your customers have a great experience online? For instance, maybe you’ve slaved over your organization’s website, making sure it represents the high quality services your team offers? Or perhaps you’ve reinvented your company emails to make sure they’re easy to digest? If so, you’ve been focused on something that every tech company is fanatical about: UX (User Experience). That’s because, in 2019, it’s no longer enough just to have a cool product or service. You now need to make it simple and engaging enough for customers to actually want to use it. And that’s where UX design comes in from understanding how customers think through 1:1 interviews to testing new website or app designs to measuring how quickly and easily users navigate those digital experiences and make a purchase. So even if you’re not a designer by trade, you can definitely take credit for your UX-oriented approach via bullets like this one: “Renovated plumbing website with an eye to world-class UX, generating 10% more lead forms by removing friction from the submission process.” X-functional Let’s close up with one keyword that every future techie should have on their resume: X-functional. Because as funky as it looks, this keyword (short for cross-functional) speaks to the highly matrixed nature of tech firms. In other words, most tech teams don’t work in functional silos e.g., marketers sit with the marketing department, engineers sit with the engineering department. Instead, they typically come together on product teams (e.g., Gmail, Alexa) that require staffers from different backgrounds to collaborate. For example, if Google wants to roll out a new feature in Gmail, they need a product manager to conceive of it based on insights they get from a UX researcher. And then, a designer has to lay it out, an engineer has to build it out, and a marketer has to get the word out. All in careful coordination with each other! So assuming you’ve had to work in similar setups at some point in your career, you might as well take credit for it with a bullet like this: “Led x-functional collaboration between HR and legal teams to establish the company’s first internship program, bringing in 39 future stars for the organization.” The A-B-Cs of T-E-C-H If you’re looking to break into tech, it can be easy to look at a resume bullet like this and throw up your hands in frustration: “Oversaw x-functional project with UX and sales teams to A/B test new CRM platform; our MVP drove historic CTRs, crushing quarterly OKRs.” But once you understand that this alphabet soup is really just common sense masquerading as top-secret insider lingo, you’ll also understand that you absolutely have what it takes to succeed in tech. How to bring creative ideas to life

How to bring creative ideas to life How to bring creative ideas to life Creative ideas can materialise at any moment and whilst some may not be practical for your business, others can have a huge impact on your enterprise and its bottom line.Thinking up these innovative ideas is one thing, but the struggle really begins when you kick off the process of bringing these creative ideas to life. Even the best business idea in the world will fail if it isn’t executed properly. We spoke with Commercial Director Michael Kalli at  The Dining Club Group  who shared with us his top 5 tips for bringing creative ideas to life:Be BraveDon’t be afraid to evolve and build on your ideas, just because you are working on one initial idea doesn’t mean that is all it needs to be. Let the idea evolve and allow the idea generation process to remain fluid so it can be continuously improved upon, if you are an expert in your field this should only make the final solution even more robust. Some of the best innovations in the world started from a different initial idea, so don ’t let your first creative vision limit its own potential; let your imagination run wild in these early stages of the process. That said, at a certain point the idea needs to be fixed and final, so you can turn your attention to the execution and implementation. Are you trying to drive customer acquisition or increase engagement? It is essential to set clear goals to be able to effectively deliver your vision. Think about what it is that you really want to achieve from your creative idea; are you trying to drive acquisitions or increase engagements? Utilise market data and research any other relevant information that is out there, dig deep to find out what is selling and what you can do better.Once you have these clear end goals set, consider how operationally you will achieve these on time and in budget. At the heart of any implementation process should be the project’s goals, and it is essential to remember this when you start looking at how your idea will work operationally.Once you are clear on the objectives, you can start to establish a process that helps the cross departmental teams focus on the collective task at hand.Don’t Go It AloneNo matter what the project, bringing an idea to life requires teamwork. You will need to pull together individuals from a range of departments to help make your visi on a reality, even if it won’t directly affect certain parts of the business. Enlist help from those who know their specific roles well and perform based on their strengths. For a team to work well together, everyone in it will need to be passionate and excited about the new idea and execute tasks based on their individual expertise. At the heart of every project team must be a Change Manager. This is a crucial role that is required to make sure all the departments come together to form a team that can spin a solid idea into firm actions, and in turn, those actions into the ultimate vision.Stay Focused and Invest Your TimeIt is easy to make any idea sound great on paper, but when it comes to bringing that idea to life you need to be committed to deliver it and prepared to do whatever you can to make it happen. It isn’t necessary to spend loads of money, but you do need to live it and invest a substantial amount of your time into it in order for your vision to be a success. You ne ed to stay focused on the initial creative idea and goals, this will help you to constantly see any opportunities to grow it further. During the implementation process your end goals should always be at the forefront of your mind, it takes a lot of dedication and hard-work from you and your team, but the end result will be worth it.Don’t Get DiscouragedEvery project comes across set-backs at some point during the implementation process and bringing a creative idea to life is no different. When you do face these set-backs, use them as a learning curve, learn quickly from them and then don’t make the same mistakes again. Don’t become discouraged by obstacles and remember that persistence pays off, working through any issues you encounter along the way will ultimately make your completed vision even stronger. When you start to feel unmotivated by your project, take yourself back to that initial creative idea that you were so excited about at the beginning of the process and remin d yourself what it was that you originally set out to achieve. This post was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

Advice for entrepreneurs from 16 people who did it themselves

Advice for entrepreneurs from 16 people who did it themselves Advice for entrepreneurs from 16 people who did it themselves Every business will face some unique challenges as it grows. But there are certain roadblocks in startup life that are common among entrepreneurs. So it helps to get advice from those who have been in your shoes. To that end, we asked 16 founders and CEOs to share their best business advice for other entrepreneurs (or aspiring entrepreneurs). Here’s the wisdom they want to pass on, based on lessons they’ve learned the hard way.Jacquelyn Ward and Ana Maes: ‘Test, test, test’Our Story Bridal is New York City’s only bridal consignment boutique. They sell designer wedding dresses at steep discounts.“Don’t wait for perfect! When starting a new business, we have learned that there is only so much you can predict with the information you have. The only way to really know if something is going to work is by testing it in a quick and scrappy way.“We started our business by gathering 40 dresses from around the city and hosting a pop-up at a friend’s showroom. During the very fi rst pop-up, we only had a few brides stop by and we learned from that and quickly adapted our marketing and processes. By our fourth pop-up, we had a waiting list of over 300 brides. Our business needs have evolved as we grow, so test things with the information you have available but rest assure, it will not be perfect, but you will be one step closer to achieving your goal.”Sabin Lomac and Jim Tselikis: ‘Develop your story’Cousins Maine Lobster runs food trucks and restaurants across the globe, where they sell lobster that is sustainably sourced directly from Maine.“It took us a long time to understand that. The first week prior to opening, I started sending out tweets to our 200 followers, and it would be a photo of Jim and I and my grandfather on the rocks in Maine eating lobster. I didn’t know at the time that this was our story; I just did it because I said, ‘Hey, We’re from Maine. We’re cousins. Let me paint you a picture.’“But after a couple years, we rea lly understood that we are a family, that this is a family business, that these are family recipes. And that should be shared and highlighted more.”Naa-Sakle Akuete: ‘Never turn down free assistance’Eu’Genia Shea is a mother-daughter-run business that sells high-quality shea-butter products while supporting fair wages for the female workers in Ghana who make those products.“When I first started, if someone offered to help me - whether it was to make an introduction or join my production line to meet tight deadlines - I would assume they were just being polite and say ‘no thanks’ because I was afraid of inconveniencing them. I’ve realized though, that most people don’t offer to help you unless they mean it.”Alexander Esposito and James Mirras: ‘Don’t get in your own way’The Free Ride offers passengers free transportation to some beaches in the Hamptons, the Jersey Shore, Santa Monica, and San Diego. Electric cars eliminate the cost of fuel and the service is sponsored by advertisers.“Since starting The Free Ride, we have frequently used the term, ‘We’ll figure it out.’ That’s not to say that we act carelessly, but we’ve done a good job about not letting smaller hiccups or uncertainties get in the way of the bigger picture.“No entrepreneur or business owner has all of the answers, but if you’re calculated, hard working, and seek good advice, you’ll figure out how to achieve the bigger goals.”Kelly Peeler: ‘Keep your end user top of mind’NextGenVest helps students navigate the college financial-aid process. Trained college students provide assistance to college applicants via text message.“There are a lot of problems to solve when building a business that can distract you from delivering real value to your users. You should wake up thinking about your end user and to go to bed thinking about your end user.”Ben Anderson: ‘Surround yourself with a group of people with diverse viewpoints and experiences’Ami no Apps allows users to create apps based on different interests and launch them through the Amino platform. Apps that are popular enough become stand-alone apps in the App store.“When starting and building a company, you’re constantly battling the unknown and grappling with problems that have no clear solution. You need diverse input from people who have a variety of backgrounds and perspectives who can help you look at issues through a new lens. This leads to higher-quality decisions and the creation of a more dynamic, energized organization.”Rus Yusupov: ‘Bring something to life’HQ Trivia hosts free, live trivia events twice daily for people all over the world. Winners receive cash prizes.“Profound motivations will take you a lot further than chasing money or a big exit. Bring something to life, solve a real problem or just build a big vision of the future.”Jen Rubio: ‘Don’t be discouraged when things don’t go according to plan’Away creates functional, affor dable luggage for modern travelers.“There is no one plan anyway! When you’re building something from scratch, there won’t be a playbook, so it’s inevitable that you’ll make some mistakes. Being flexible and able to adapt to the unexpected will help you stay focused on what matters, rather than allowing yourself to get derailed over the little things.”Alexi Nazem: ‘Take a step back every once in a while’Nomad Health helps connect freelance clinicians to work in healthcare systems.“You’re in for a roller coaster ride, so buckle up! The emotional journey of building a company is almost impossible to anticipate. You care so much about this thing you started, so everything is amplified. The highs are very high and the lows are very low. And even with that warning going in, you are still going to underestimate the degree of whiplash.“But, the good news is that building a company also comes with an immense sense of pride. You get to create something from nothing. So b e sure to take a step back every once in a while and appreciate all the many things you and your team are sure to have accomplished. It’s amazing what a small group of motivated people can do.”Ilir Sela: ‘Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you’Slice lets customers order from local pizzerias (that aren’t necessarily on services like Seamless) through a mobile app.“Build up an incredible team that will help you scale the business, that will bring world-class knowledge and ability. Learn from them. You win with people.”Bouchra Ezzahraoui and Sophie Kahn: ‘Just do it’ and ‘be transparent’AUrate sells affordable, ethically sourced, high-quality gold jewelry.Ezzahraoui: “A lot of people spend years working on business plans and debating what strategy they should go for. In startups, unfortunately you can’t be making a two-year strategy. That’s not how it works given how fast things are moving. You’re moving almost a quarter at a time.“Go for it. There’s no need to spend a year working on business models or all these great ideas or make projections for the next five years. Just go and start. Do it. Test it. Have focus groups. Start with people around you.”Kahn: “What was helpful when Bouchra and I started a business on the side was actually talking about it with my [then] current employer. You don’t want to feel like a double agent. I would always recommend that as opposed to doing it without people [at work] really knowing about it.”Neil Grimmer: ‘Make your business personal’Habit provides customers with DNA and other kinds of testing so they can learn more about their specific nutritional needs. Customers also receive personalized recipes from Habit.“Starting a business requires long hours and personal sacrifice, and can be tough on you as an individual. So it has to be meaningful and something you believe will transform lives.“For example, my first company, Plum, was started because I was a young pa rent trying to feed my kids the best food possible, and I didn’t feel like that option was out there. Likewise, the inspiration for Habit came from my own personal health and wellness journey. I found a diet that worked for me after many trips to specialists, genetics and blood tests, and I wanted to make this process of personalized nutrition easier to access for the average consumer.”Amy Chasan: ‘Build an incredible team’Sweet Generation is a New York City bakery where the pastries are handmade by groups of at-risk youth learning professional skills.“Whether it’s just you and one other person, or you and 15 other people - you spend more time with your team than your family, so you have to love them. They ultimately will make our break the sustainability of what you are working so hard to build. And when times get tough, which they inevitably do, your team is there to keep pushing you forward.”Evgeny Milyutin: ‘Invest time in your customer’Happy Numbers helps tea chers personalize math instruction through an artificial intelligence-enabled math education platform. The program provides interactive exercises for students and then delivers feedback to the teachers based on the students’ performance.“Understand exactly what their day looks like and what keeps them up at night. A true understanding of all their pain points, even if they are not directly related to the problem your product is solving, will help you develop a solution that customers will trust. It also will give you lots of ideas of what else you can do for your customer.”Emma Straub: ‘Focus on what you do best’Books Are Magic is an independent bookstore in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn that hosts literary events and offers a wide selection of both fiction and non-fiction.“Find people to help you with the things you’re less good at - there are so many tasks in the running of the bookstore, and one person can’t do everything.”Jack Kramer: ‘Know, don’t think”MarketSn acks puts out a daily finance newsletter geared toward millennials.“We use fantastic, engaging, visually sleek surveys to constantly gain insights on our readers in a non-intrusive way - they love participating so we can further sculpt our product to meet their needs. We convert ‘I think’ what they want to ‘I know’ what they want.”This article first appeared on Business Insider.

Learn What It Really Takes to Be a Police Officer

Learn What It Really Takes to Be a Police Officer Learn What It Really Takes to Be a Police Officer According to data from the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, there are more than 900,000 people working as police officers in the United States. Even at nearly 1 million officers, police departments across the country report recruitment issues and keeping officers on the job. Why? Because the fact of the matter is, the job isnt for everyone. Plenty of people apply to be cops, but only a very small percentage can actually get hired. Even fewer can stay on the job. Its hard: you see terrible things, you see people at their absolute worst, and your chosen profession is at least from a surface view increasingly derided by people for myriad reasons across all walks of life. Sounds like a load of fun, doesnt it? Nonetheless, 1 million police officers cant be wrong. At the end of the day, its a good job. The only question is, are you ready for everything it means to be a cop? Are You Ever Really Prepared? Years ago, when I first applied to become a police officer, I had all kinds of grand visions of what I thought the job would be like. While I never once thought it would be easy, the first day at the police academy very quickly proved to me that I had no idea what I was in for. As tough as the academy was, once I graduated and began the field training officer program, I realized that the job of a police officer was about so much more than just making traffic stops and putting bad guys in jail. What I learned was that the job meant long and irregular hours along with tough and dangerous situations. You deal with a lot of people who dont like you very much, most certainly dont appreciate getting speeding tickets or taking trips to jail,  and who are all too happy to express their displeasure.  I learned this a long time ago, before the explosion of the internet, YouTube, blogging and social media made police scrutiny deeper. Public Scrutiny Is Getting Tougher The public has always expected high ethical standards from their police officers. The digital age, however, has exposed police to a whole new level of scrutiny, with much attention paid to the small but harmful few officers whose actions  damage public support for the police. What does all that mean for new officers today? In short, it means that their job is only going to get harder. The world for police officers is becoming increasingly dangerous. Its not just the physical dangers that are inherent in a law  enforcement  career; applicants understand those. But many current officers feel increased concern about their own job security. Real or  perceived, law enforcement professionals report feeling that theyre one bad YouTube video away from losing their job. Moreover, they report the concern that public perceptions restrict their ability to do their jobs. The Job Is Only Getting Harder The work environment for police officers has, in the eyes of many, become a pressure cooker. Officers have to make split-second decisions every day. Those decisions can mean their own life or death or that of another. For officers, those decisions can also mean the difference between having a job and being unemployed. The bottom line, and what you really need to know if youre considering a career in law enforcement, is that the job of a police officer is only going to get harder. Without a plan to maintain both your mental and physical health, youll have difficulty coping with the stresses of the job. Do You Have What It Takes? With that in mind, though, the simple fact is that the world needs good police officers people who can be tough but compassionate, who can handle the danger and the stress and the derision, and who have the desire and the ability to help and protect others, even at their own personal expense.   If youre willing to take all of that on, then maybe just maybe you have what it takes to be a police officer.

The Role of Proof of Performance and the Media

The Role of Proof of Performance and the Media The Role of Proof of Performance and the Media When it comes to media and advertising, managing schedules and ad placements can be difficult and overwhelming. When an advertiser enters into an agreement with a website or television or radio station, the outlet often gives the advertiser a proof of performance (POP). This provides advertisers proof that their ads actually ran as expected, fulfilling the requirements of the contract. Its a form of insurance for advertisers, so they know they got what they paid for.   How are POPs developed? A POP contains the date, time and station when the ad aired. It usually includes screenshots or clips of how it appeared on air. In radio, audio clips are recorded instead. For print ads, there is usually a tear sheet from the publication to show when it ran. In the growing area of digital advertising, there is not an industry standard for web proof of performance. Some advertisers do not get any POP; others get screenshots of banner ads and weekly figures. Some choose to check the sites themselves. Who puts together POPs? Larger advertising outlets often have proof of performance specialists on staff. They are typically assigned a certain number of clients to track. They are responsible for: Reviewing photos of advertising campaigns and reporting any discrepancies  or errorsCreating compliance reports to send to clients, either using PowerPoint or a program designed specifically to create proof of performance reportsEnsure that campaigns meet all contract stipulations and client standardsCommunicates with other departments to get photos, tear sheets, audio samples of video clips of each ad placementProvides status updates to clients, such as how much of that contract has been fulfilled to date Works with the data or research department to collect results from advertising campaigns, such as the number of ad clicks or increases in web trafficWorks with the account managers to collect and report data to build proposalsManage client information and branding guidelines In smaller outlets, the proof of performance specialist position is usually combined with other roles, such as an account manager or marketing assistant. Electronic Versus Hard Copy In years past, proof of performance reports were only available in hard copy form. They often were thick books or stacks of paper, with tear sheets and audio discs from publications and media outlets. This could be cumbersome and annoying for clients, who were looking for assurance their needs were being met and that they were getting results for their expenditures. In recent years, hard copy proof of performance reports are no longer common. Most companies have made the shift to digital versions, taking advantage of online and cloud access to share media reports and link?s  to ads as they are posted. This streamlines the process significantly for both advertisers and outlets or agencies, as everything can be done digitally and edited, without having to worry about mailing completed reports or sifting through piles of paperwork. New companies have been launched to meet this growing demand, offering dynamic proof of performance creation services, where outlets can create visually engaging reports quickly and easily.

Origami Provides Unexpected Inspiration

Origami Provides Unexpected Inspiration Origami Provides Unexpected Inspiration Origami Provides Unexpected Inspiration When you consider what could possibly inspire the design of a bulletproof shield to protect law enforcement, you probably wouldnt choose origami first. Or second. Or even 102nd. We were working on going from origami for paper to other things, says Larry Howell, professor of mechanical engineering and associate dean for the college of engineering and technology at Brigham Young University.Paper creases well but you want the same properties here with origami to fold something flat and expand out. For example, doing it with solar panels. We had been discovering many ways of taking origami from paper art to engineering applications. Bulletproof material is definitely not what you would think of when it comes to origami, but we saw deployable barriers as a possibility. For the bulletproof material used in the shield, the team looked at choices such as canvass and fiberglass before finally deciding on Kevlar. You can compress [the shield] down in a very compact state made of six layers of Kevlar, he says. It has six layers of Kevlar and then you can fold down the panels so 12 layers of Kevlar overall. Kevlar is bullet resistant but its actually not resistant to sunlight and water. So on the outside cover it has ballistic nylon, the same material for things like backpacks and laptop cases. The new ballistic barrier is made of 12 layers of Kevlar and can fold up and stow in a vehicle. Image: Brigham Young University An advantage is that it stows very compactly, he says, adding that it weighs 55 pounds in the current configuration, with the barrier being about 50 pounds and then the other hardware, such as handles, adding another five pounds. He estimates it deploys in about five seconds. Most shields arent actually even deployable, he explains. Most are just chunks of steel like any shield, and the few that are deployable are things you have to assemble. The shield also has a curvature that provides some flank protection, he says. There was a great deal of adjustment along the way, using prototypes. We started out with paper, then went to card stock, which is rigid but still easy to work with, and then we moved to full-scale prototype with canvas and fiberglass, he says. Thats where we worked out a lot of bugs, and then we moved to Kevlar. We want to improve [the shield] to have different sizes. For a SWAT team you can have about three people taking cover behind this, but for an individual police officer there is value to having smaller ones. We also want to get deploying time down. They tested the shield with local company Action Target, going out to a local county sheriffs shooting range, where they had law enforcement at the federal and local levels subject it to live fire, says Howell. We went with a 9-millimeter, a .357 Magnum, and a .44 Magnum and the shield did well, he says. We thought it wouldnt work if an assault rifle was used and, when it was fired, it did go through the shield. Howell found the response from law enforcement to be very positive, not just in terms of the effectiveness of the shield but also the thought that went into its creation. They really just thanked us for caring about their safety and that means a lot, he says. Its also been great to have so many students involved and most were mechanical engineers. You want to show them that what they learn has meaningful applications. Seeing what comes of it is energizing, especially when you see that it can possibly make a positive difference. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion You want to show them [students] that what they learn has meaningful applications. Seeing what comes of it is energizing. How to Get a Job Promotion

How to Get a Job Promotion How to Get a Job Promotion You've landed that corporate accounting job, and now you may be wondering what's next. Should you be thinking about your next job promotion and what lies ahead? Is it too soon to ask for the corner office? Think of it this way: Your career path is a work in progress, and each job promotion is earned, not simply handed out. The key to moving up is to take the right steps at the right time. Here are six suggestions that will help you reach your goals. 1. Map out your pathway to a job promotion Take a good look at your department and examine what the pathways are. At the top of a typical finance hierarchy is a CFO or vice president of finance. Below that person is a controller or director, followed by managers and staff-level financial specialists. Among these, depending on the size of your employer, there may be an internal audit career path or tracks for general accounting, management or cost accounting, tax accounting, compliance, business analysis and payroll. If you’re in public accounting, you may be headed up the CPA career path. While you want to be open to multiple opportunities, you should also think about what type of accounting piques your interest and what you want to specialize in. 2. Get more education You probably already have a four-year degree in business, finance or accounting. If not, at the top of your to-do list should be a relevant bachelor’s degree, which is almost always a requirement for a job promotion in accounting. You should also be working toward your CPA or CMA (certified management accountant) credential, both of which open doors and set you apart from your competition. Other professional certifications include: CIA (certified internal auditor) CISA (certified information systems auditor) CPP (certified payroll professional) CCEP (certified compliance ethics professional) If you want to become a financial controller or CFO someday, a graduate degree, such as an MBA, is a definite plus. Some employers partially or fully reimburse workers the cost of attaining certifications or degrees, so take advantage of this perk, if you can. Looking to start anew at a different company? See what positions we place at Robert Half. 3. Polish all those skills The higher you climb in accounting and finance, the more you’ll need technical skills, as well as abilities in leadership, critical thinking and written and verbal communication, so professional development is a must. You should also hone your interpersonal skills, which include negotiation, persuasion and relationship management. Formal instruction is helpful, but some of the best training occurs on the job. During meetings, pay attention to the discussion so you can make meaningful contributions. Eagerly accept assignments where you’ll have to give presentations or write reports, and then ask your boss for feedback on how you could do better the next time. Volunteer to manage tough projects. You’re more likely to get ahead when you do more than the minimum to get by. 4. Be happy and professional Who wants to work with negative people who complain all the time? Leaders look for emerging talent who see opportunities, not obstacles. Position yourself as a problem-solver with the foresight to see future possibilities. It also goes without saying that you should be professional at all times. That means dressing professionally and being punctual, cooperative and productive. 5. Do internal networking The path to a job promotion isn’t built on just accounting know-how. To get ahead, you’ll also need to navigate office politics. Be seen as a team player instead of just another behind-the-scenes worker, and don’t limit your networking efforts to your boss alone. Think about establishing your connections internally throughout the company. Often, it’s not just one person who makes the decision about an employee’s promotion. If everyone has positive things to say about you, it will increase your chances to get promoted faster. 6. Be open with your boss There’s no need to keep your enthusiasm and career goals a secret. Tap your boss for advice and direction. Employers are eager to hold on to talented employees, and one of the best ways for them to do that is to help staff move up within the ranks rather than seek opportunities elsewhere. Let your manager know of your interest in a long-term career within the company. Then ask for advice on how to get there. Some of the steps may include continuing education courses, skills training, job shadowing and/or a mentorship with a senior member of the team. Getting a job promotion is great recognition from your company that your contributions are valued. If you're looking for the next opportunity, keep these tips in mind to ensure you are on the right track to success. Rather than waiting for fate to smile upon you, create your own “luck” through hard work, perseverance and a little political savvy.
